I had the room all set up with the art for the Out west Show in Great Falls. There was a good variety of paintings set up and in through the door walks Woody Harrelson and he is going to buy a painting. I am pretty stoked about the purchase but for whatever reason believe the painting can use a better frame. I go running out into the parking lot and search for the newer frame that will perhaps embellish the art a little better. I never make it back to the room in time before I woke up, so I am assuming I lost the sale.
In a thought this morning, the presentation of art is just about everything that art is. It is as if the timing is critical but where will that timing take place, is essential to making a sale for the piece. This takes me back to a photography final I had made about irony that had to do with ironic pictures and to make it into a wishlist around Christmas turned into a huge cluster when the Good Will Store refused to let me put it up in front of their store. The place where you can get just about everything, and it went against their company policy for whatever reason to not put up the non offensive photos that showed irony. This led to the class standing out in the pouring rain as I hung the list from a tree. The presentation absolutely blew and I definitely got marked down on the final for that. I would agree it was a weak presentation on a gloomy day with water hitting the canvas and getting the photos all wet as well as the rest of the class being drenched and shivering in the snow flecked rain.
The whole idea of a presentation is to start with the frame and be confident in what that frame is. Right now the double frame presentation sets the art panels away from each other that allows for the refraction and shadows to come through. This presentation is every idea in making fly cast art coming to fruition with the space over the top of a fly cast painting. It is a simple design that has a slight rustic flare and a very understandable way to center the painting on a wall when the polycarbonate can be moved within its parameters of the frame. Thinking about this idea and making an all enclosed frame with the desired space could be the downfall of the art or with a few lights be a center of focus for the painting or it could take away from the airy feel that the original frame creates in its simplicity. This takes us back to Woody Harrelson and in the end know going in how the work will be presented but even more where the interaction for the painting will take place to have its most powerful impact.
