The Madison river has an ample amount of vegetation in its waters hence the green coming through in the late summer as well as a slight hint of blue reflected off the bright sunny day. Going back to the studio all of the paint from the creel was dumped out and used as the palette to create the trout image and set up a monochrome feel to the entirety of the work. I have often thought of using this as a part of the process and giving exactly what the river was offering and don’t stray from the trouts natural setting. My color scheme is pretty well thought out but the idea of working within the restrictive parameters is always enticing as a challenge. I wanted the trout to be larger than life but fit will into the painting and exhibit the fly cast as the world in which this monster trout resides.
